Join Us in the Garden

It’s fall in the garden, which means it's time for a celebration of all of the hard work contributed by our student, parent, and staff volunteers during the growing season! During the CSLA After School Garden Club, we will explore the tools of our trade. Together we'll put the garden to bed and enjoy the fruits of our labor by saving seeds for next year, enjoying tasty treats cooked in the solar oven, exploring the abundance of the garden harvest and celebrating the harvest season through art and community in the garden.

Wednesdays for grades 3-8

(younger students can participate when accompanied by an adult)

August 17 & 31, September 7 & 21, October 5 & 19, November 2 & 16
4:00pm - 5:30pm

Wednesday, August 17: What's Growing On in the CSLA Garden?

The first session of Garden Club will be an exploratory introduction to the garden site. First, we'll investigate what's growing.  Second, we'll head to the picnic tables and let our taste buds do the walking as we sample roots, shoots, fruits, seeds and leaves on our exploratory tour of the fall gardens. By the end we'll each get to take a sample of produce home to share and enjoy with our friends and family.

Wednesday, August 31: Preparation for Cool Season Planting

Be ready to get dirty. We will be clearing our summer garden beds in preparation for our “Cool Season” planting. We will plot out the best locations and estimate the necessary space for each plant species.

Wednesday, September 7: Cool Season Planting – AKA – “Ground it!”

Spend the afternoon learning about plants that thrive in cooler weather. We’ll plant some established seedlings and sew some seeds to begin our fall garden.

Wednesday, September 21: Solar Oven Fun

By harnessing the power of the sun, we’ll enjoy the garden’s bounty – cooking some delicious squash cookies and fresh garden pizzas! We’ll harvest as many ingredients as we can from the garden and work together to create a tasty snack.  Participants will take home detailed and practiced plans to make their own solar oven!
